Plans for the prestigious Gorey 3-Day International Bike Race over the Easter weekend (April 19th-21st) have been scrapped and this year’s event cancelled “due to a significant drop in rider entries.”
Race Director Derek Webb told WexfordLocal.com that “rider entries have completely collapsed” and everybody is disappointed, but added; “numbers to date were 62, well short of what’s needed to make the event viable.
“We will regroup, resubmit for next season and, in the meantime, try to get a handle on why the entries were so low,” said Mr Webb who expressed appreciation to all who are part of organising the event, and concluded; “We will try to get it back on the road next season.”
Alice Sherratt said; “Gone are the days when we would have 200 entries within 48 hours and a waiting list. The first event was run in 1967 with Brendan Duncan race director and was won by Peter Doyle.”
She added; “With a stage race the organisers cannot leave it to the last minute to cancel, the interest of hotels and guest houses who would have been keeping places for us need to be considered.
